Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) started as Sultan Zainal Abidin Religious College (KUSZA). KUSZA began operating on 1 January 1980 in Batu Burok before moving to the Hajah Wook Building in Pulau Kambing in 1981.

KUSZA has been upgraded as a university and is known as Universiti Darul Iman (UDM). UDM underwent a rebranding process on 14 May 2010 and was later known as Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). The name Almarhum Sultan Zainal Abidin III Muazzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Muazzam Shah II, the 11th Sultan of Terengganu is used to commemorate the services of His Majesty the late Sultan in spreading knowledge and religion in the state of Terengganu.
