The Malaysian Fire Service began in 1883 with the establishment of the Selangor State Volunteer Fire Brigade led by H.F Bellamy with 15 members. This force placed under the Sanitation Board became the Permanent Fire and Rescue Force in 1895. The service continued to grow in each state and was placed under the Municipal Council or Rural Board. In 1946, after the Second World War, the 'Malayan Union Fire Services' team was formed. MUS is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.
Through the agreement of the Federation of Malaya, the Fire Service was handed back to the state governments under the administration of the Town and Rural Boards according to their respective states. To coordinate the Fire service was established under the Ministry of Development and Local Government.
The Malaysian Fire Service was consolidated as a department at the federal level and the consolidation of Fire and Rescue in the Federal States on 1st January 1976. This consolidation placed the Malaysian Fire Service under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. This was followed by the Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca Fire Services on 1st January 1977

On 15 May 1981, the Sabah and Sarawak Fire Services were merged.
On 8th January 1997, the Cabinet of Ministers agreed to change the name of the Malaysian Fire Service Department to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department where on 21st February 1997, YAB the Prime Minister of Malaysia officially announced and launched the change of name, logo and flag of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department in Genting Highlands.
In 1998, the Department had 2 helicopters and started the Fire Air Unit. In 2005, JBPM received MS ISO 9001:2000 recognition in the field of fire and rescue operations.
